Ethel and Dempsey
An Interesting Birthday Gift
Hi boys and girls- my name is Ethel, or if your parents taught you well, Mrs. Falkenberg. I promise that everything I am about to tell you is true- or, in my advanced age, I just misremembered.
Ethel excitedly opened the large package that her husband, Harold, had saved for last on her 65th birthday. Harold typically gave an expensive gift as his last gift- jewelry, dresses, and last year a new car, so Ethel was really anticipating some luxurious gift.
Upon tearing the package open vigorously Ethel looked crestfallen.
“You gave me a Cane? Are you sure you didn’t mean this gift for your mother?” Ethel asked disappointedly.
“Ethel darling,” replied her husband, “This is no ordinary cane. Let’s go for a ride.” Harold continued during the ride back, “Century Station is getting more and more dangerous- I want you to be know that you are able to protect yourself. This cane is made of hi-tech materials, and can shoot 3 times.”
They pulled into the lot of a shooting range, where they spent the day. Harold taught her how to use the cane, as well as a revolver. Ethel found that she was a natural, and she really enjoyed shooting at targets.
On the ride home, Ethel reached over and gave Harold a hug. “I am going to call the cane Dempsey, as in Jack Dempsey, for it really packs a wallop! They laughed together as the sun set….

I wanted to at least have one log of how happy she was with Harold.
I can see why she spits now, having all that be a sham in the end. So sad!
Harold and Ethel, the great American love story!
OMG! The subtext here is amazing, and timely!
This would be a much happier tale…if we didn’t know how it turned out in the end. Poor Mz. Falkenburg.
Excuse me…Mrs. Falkenburg
