Granny’s Conversation with Snake Person
Hi boys and girls- my name is Ethel, or if your parents taught you well, Mrs. Falkenberg. I promise that everything I am about to tell you is true- or, in my advanced age, I just misremembered.
This is a conversation between Snake Person and Ethel on their way back from Antarctica in the Spaceship.
Ethel begins, after about 15 minutes in silence. “How long have you known Jake?”
“Sister of Jake, I have known Jake for a very long time. It has been close to 40 Earth years I believe since we first met.”
“Where did you meet?”
“We met on the planet Grymdin, far from the heart of the Federation of Allied Races. Near the borders of the Titrana and Liloqua quadrants.”
“Is that where you are from?”
“No, Sister of Jake. I was not from there. Like Jake, I had traveled there to seek the refuge of the lawless. I did not expect the lawless to have such rigid rules of their own. It is because of us that there are only 6 families in charge of that rock now.”
“Tell me about your home, if you would not mind.”
“My home was a small dwelling on a small planet. Mara cared for it well. This no longer matters. The Atorians have made sure I cannot return home again. I no longer wish to talk about this.”
“I am very sorry,” Ethel says, and quickly changes the subject. “How many Jake’s have you known? Are you familiar with any evil Jake?”
“Jake does not get along well with other Jakes. I have met very few, and known none.”
“Yes, Sister of Jake. I am familiar with an Evil Jake.”
“How many Ethel’s have you known? Tell me about any evil Ethel’s please.”
“I have known no other Sisters of Jake.”
“You have been a good friend to my brother, and our interactions have been pleasant. Is there anything I can do for you?”
“This ship is very badly damaged. I am having a small difficulty piloting it while remaining hidden from the Atorian and Thissera-Micean Cooperative ships in orbit. Quiet would help.”
“Ok, one last question- What do you like to eat?”
“I am especially fond of eggs.”
